Carnatic Saxophone Classics
Carnatic Saxophone Classics is a double disc compilation of popular South Indian Classical pieces spanning 500 years of Carnatic composers. The album’s featured artist, Dr. Sumanth Swaminathan, is a saxophone virtuoso with an instrumental style that is colored by his two gurus: saxophone master, Padmashree Dr. Kadri Gopalnath and vocal vidwan, Sri T.N. Bala. Supporting artists Srikant Venkatraman (Violin) and Vijay Ganesh (Mridangam) provide a world class accompaniment reflective of their decorated musical careers.
The album is presented in the format of a South Indian kutcheri, replete with tonal and rhythmic improvisation on a variety of ragas. The signature piece, split into two tracks entitled “Raga Alapana – Kapi” and “Intha Sowkhyamani”, displays most of the major improvisational forms in carnatic music (including alapana, neraval, and swara). This album is Sumanth’s first professional release and is now available for purchase!
